Biography

Born in 1982 in Seoul, South Korea, Park is a graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven. After working with a series of prestigious design companies in the Netherlands, he established Studio Wonmin Park, based in Eindhoven, in 2011. He has also established a production facility in Rotterdam and a creative studio in Paris.

Park seeks to make pieces that “speak for themselves”, that are “beautiful, attractive and engage with their surroundings.” His work has a simplicity and subtlety of touch, with a delicate colour palette that evokes a dream-like quality. Park seeks to give the people who experience his design “the space to explore their own sensations and emotions”.

Park is drawn to the medium of resin as it captures the qualities of light and air. Caught between substantiality and insubstantiality, opacity and transparency, with no fixed contours, resin gives the impression of ephemerality. His Haze series of chairs and tables is formed entirely from geometric shapes that are placed together asymmetrically. However, the asymmetry of form is balanced by the subtle use of colour, alluding to the nature of life as a balancing act between rationality and the self, where the former often dominates to the detriment of the latter.

His more recent works explore the materiality of aluminium. Contrasting the Haze series, his Plain Cuts tables evoke a sense of permanence. Using clean, symmetrical lines and a dark palette, these pieces are brutalist and industrial in form, focusing on the abstract geometry of construction and virtual lines. From his observations of the world and his environment, he proposes a contemporary design with a contemplative attitude, which finds its roots in Korean tradition and philosophy. This approach is exemplified in Plain Cuts, which underlines Park’s exploration of materiality and his fascination with architecture.

Wonmin has exhibited his work at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris and at Design Miami and TEFAF New York. His works now belong to important collections, like the Triennial Design Museum in Milan, and also the Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul.
