Born in Whalley, United Kingdom, in 1966 Stuart Haygarth is an artist and designer. He graduated from Exeter College of Art and Design in 1988 and began his career as a photographer, working as a visiting professor at Plymouth University Photography Department between 1995 and 2005.

In 2003, his career changed course as he started to explore three-dimensional space through sculpture. However, his photographer’s eye continues to inform his practice, as the effect of the light and environment inspire everything from his choice of materials to the composition of his pieces.

Haygarth has a fascination with the everyday. He desires to both celebrate and elevate that which is lost or forgotten, using found items to make pieces that tell stories. Each item has its own unique history, offering a glimpse into past lives and past experiences, telling not only Hogarth’s story but the story of those who once owned them. The driving force of his work is its humanity, giving the overlooked a “new significance”.

Haygarth’s Strand chandelier, commissioned by University College Hospitals for their Macmillan Cancer Centre, is a work that attests to the simple beauty of the everyday. Made from objects that Haygrath found washed ashore during his 450-mile coastal walk across the south of England, the chandelier celebrates that which was once lost or discarded. Each item was methodically categorised by colour and type and then arranged in a spectrum from white to black. The chandelier is an explosion of colour in the neutral hospital environment, standing out as a symbol of hope and vitality.

Many of Haygarth’s works are part of permanent museum collections, including the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, the Design Museum, London, the Usher Gallery, Lincoln, the Craig Robins Collection, Miami, and the David Roberts Collection, London. He has also undertaken commissions for several high-profile companies, such as his ‘Comet’ chandelier for Coca Cola HQ, London, ‘Ember’ for Abu Dhabi Art, UAE, and ‘Framed’ for the V&A, London.
